Restrictions on consultants working non-contracted hours for competing providers
The Department of Health and Monitor have asked the Cooperation and Competition Panel (CCP) to carry out a study of restrictions on NHS consultants that prevent them from working for other healthcare providers of NHS-funded services.
Concerns have been expressed that this could be preventing providers from offering new services, and as a result, restricting patient choice and competition.
In the event that such restrictions are found to be problematic, the CCP has been asked to make recommendations to assist NHS organisations in addressing the challenges posed by consultants working for multiple operators, including both NHS and independent sector providers.
